How and Why We Read
Reading is a way to connect, whether with yourself, something, or someone else. I read for a few different reasons, mainly because I feel like I spend too much time on social media, video games, or my phone in general. Having the ability to disconnect from the online world and hold a physical book in my hands is one of the best parts of reading, in my opinion. I feel like anytime I read something, I always take away a lesson or learn something new, even if it is about a fictional world; it gives me something to think about. I also enjoy reading before bed rather than on my phone, as it lets my brain settle down and avoid the effects of blue light.
This past summer, I spent a lot of time reading, specifically poetry. My sister and I both spent a lot of time reading and comparing on Goodreads. It was pretty competitive, to be honest, but it was also super fun and motivated me to get back into reading. I also enjoy reading graphic novels, especially during the summer, as they are easier to read. I have recommended various books to friends and family that I know they would strongly relate to, and it has been heartwarming to see their reactions. I recommended a book by Roz Chast to my mom, and I would hear her laugh from across the room. I loved that it brought her the same joy it brought me. Many of the books I read this summer had a profound impact on me, making me question who I am, who I want to be, and what the purpose of life is. It prompts some pretty heavy questions, but to me, they are worth considering.
Recently, I have been trying to listen to more podcasts. It was hard to get used to them at first, but now they are very helpful when it comes to falling asleep. However, listening to podcasts is not quite the same as reading a physical book for me. When I read the book on my own, I am forced to form my own interpretations of what is happening, especially when it comes to dialogue. I think reading a book on your own, not just listening to a podcast, uses more brain power, at least for me. That is why podcasts are so great for relaxing and trying to reduce sleep latency. As I get older, it has gotten harder and requires more brainpower to visualize books and hear characters' voices. Whereas, reading used to be hard when I kept coming across unfamiliar words or topics as a child.
I think it is essential to let people discover a wide range of books, media, genres, and more, so they can develop a genuine love of reading. I think everyone reads for different reasons. However, in my opinion, everyone reads to feel some way, whether that is being entertained, happy, sad, or something else.
